Ensemble Contemporary α

Ensemble Contemporary α is a Tokyo-based ensemble established in 1997. They have emphasized collaborative music making through which composer members create new repertoire while performer members interpret composers' musical esthetics and reflect them to the performance. Given many world premieres and Japanese premieres, the enriched concert productions by fresh and precise performances of this ensemble have been highly acclaimed and have kept public attention. Since 1998, it has stepped into a new experimental field by launching Ensemble Contemporary α Solo Recital Series featuring each performer member. The ensemble's programs have consisted of pieces written after World War II. They have also included newly commissioned pieces by the composer members. With its sights on establishing new music, presenting new musical issues, and cultivating music in the next generation, the Ensemble Contemporary α flexibly and stimulatingly continues to develop its action.
